Tala Al-Khaled, M.D.

Tala Al-Khaled, MD, is a cataract and glaucoma surgeon certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society.

Dr. Al-Khaled is a proud alumna of the GPPA Medical Scholars BA/MD program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At the culmination of her undergraduate training, she was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in the Bachelor of the Arts in the Fall of 2015. She continued on to the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine where she received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2020. Dr. Al-Khaled continued forward at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she completed her residency training in Ophthalmology in 2024, followed by a fellowship in Glaucoma in 2025, at the prestigtious Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary.

During her fellowship, Dr. Al-Khaled underwent robust training in the surgical and clinical management of the spectrum of glaucomatous disease and complex cataracts. Dr. Al-Khaled performs glaucoma drainage implantation (tube shunt surgery), as well microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). Dr. Al-Khaled’s fellowship experience was under the mentorship of exceptional leaders in the field of glaucoma, Dr. Ahmad Aref and Dr. Thasarat Vajaranant.

Throughout her training, Dr. Al-Khaled authored numerous peer- reviewed publications in leading journals in the field of ophthalmology, including work in artificial intelligence, tele- education, and tele-ophthalmology. Dr. Al-Khaled has authored book chapters, as well as articles featured in various ophthalmic magazines, including Glaucoma Today, Retinal Physician, Retina Today, and EyeWiki. She has participated in major ophthalmology conferences, resulting in podium presentations, as well as being a recipient of a travel grant from the National Eye Institute.

During her leisurely time, Dr. Al-Khaled composes music on the piano, enjoys photography & videography of loved ones and scenic places, and relishes traveling with her husband Adam to explore history, culture, and cuisine. She is fluent in the Arabic language and has full working proficiency in the Spanish language.
